Oliver Seager, YMCA staff member. Together with two residents of the YMCA, I worked with a group of young people to produce an original composition, as well as running music and songwriting workshops.

The young people composed a song and rap then produced the video from scratch, with a small grant from Y Care International. They even got local residents and police involved to give the video a humorous twist.

The song speaks out against the negative stereotyping of young people, promoting the message that young people can make a positive change in the world. At a time when the media is focused on high levels of youth and knife crime, this project shows the positive impact young people can have, even with few resources.

Tyrell, who helped run the project, says: “We need to bridge the gap and I feel that this track is a starting point to show youth that we understand and things can change if we speak out."

'Robin Hood' slideshow sound treatment was recorded with the limitations of a £15 dictaphone for Future Creative.
Briary Primary School 2009.

Working with Rapucation, 11 youths created a 4 track EP called 'Flipside'. They chose to speak out about life changing issues such as judgement, crime, drugs and the importance of building positive futures.

This project was created by Canterbury High School students. The song ‘Imagine’ looks at the Holocaust with its relevance to today. A group of students visited the concentration camps and created and original song as a response to their experiences.
