Smugglers Records is built around a community ethic and the economics of sharing. It is a collective of many people, including musicians, promoters and friends who are finding ways of recording and releasing music at a low cost to both the artist and fan.

The label is looking to make records with great artists that need to be heard. They put on parties and festivals featuring acts on the SMUGGLERS RECORDS label and also many other good bands they have met along the way.

The economics of sharing within SMUGGLERS RECORDS revolves around anyone involved being able to help the next person or someone within the collective, therefore keeping costs down and allowing the artist a more viable route for releasing their music.

Bands within the SMUGGLERS collective find ways of touring together, recording together, and designing artwork together. If one person can help the next then the ball keeps rolling.

Parts of the collective produce their own bio-fuel, therefore keeping distribution and touring costs down and reducing their carbon footprint.

The SMUGGLERS RECORDS recording studio was hand built by members of the collective. They also grow their own vegetables within the garden of the studio, recycle and repair old equipment and develop a more sustainable way of living and working.

DISCOGRAPHY

The first record to be released on SMUGGLERS RECORDS was ‘The Story of Lunatic Van Rogue’ EP (SR001) by Cocos Lovers.

This was a four track ep recorded and produced by Ollie Seager and mixed by Burak Topalakci. A 1000 copies of the ep were produced in CD format using a minimalist sleeve to reduce packaging costs. The art and design for the sleeve was undertaken by friend of the band Tom O. Maryniak.

This CD has since sold out and has received airplay on Radio Kent and BBC6 Music. It has also brought the band to the attention to a number of the summer’s festivals, including Secret Garden Party and Big Green Gathering. The bands second ep is currently in production with a planned release for early July.

"An eccentric, vaguely folky bunch of lovable types exuding a rare warmth and playing a succession of gorgeous songs. I can confirm that they are indeed wonderful." 'Sounds from the spring' Blog
